EV-friendly Sydney: Where to dine, shop and recharge | Avis Car Rental

Exploring Sydney in an electrical vehicle has never been easier

As the city embraces a greener future, more and more cafes, restaurants, and shopping centres in Sydney have EV charging stations on-site or nearby, so you can ensure your car stays powered up while you indulge in the best the city has to offer.

From scenic brunch spots and decadent patisseries to luxury malls and bustling markets, charging stations abound for EV drivers. If you’re heading to the Hunter Valley or Blue Mountains for the weekend, you’ll find places to charge your EV at wineries and scenic lookouts alike.

We’ve put together a guide to some of the best spots in Sydney and further afield to recharge your car and yourself.

Cafes and restaurants

The Boathouse, Balmoral

Whether you’re stopping by for brunch or burgers, The Boathouse at Balmoral Beach is an idyllic location year-round for fish and chips and an Aperol Spritz with a side of stunning views. And if the temperature’s right, you can take a dip in the lagoon-like sea after you’ve eaten. No matter how long you stay, there’s no need to worry about running out of battery, with an EVie charging station five minutes up the road in Mosman.

Black Star Pastry, Newtown

In the mood for something sweet? You can’t go past Black Star Pastry. From its Instagram-famous Strawberry Watermelon Cake, with fresh watermelon, rose-scented cream and rose petals, to its Origami Lemon Cake, topped with a delicate white chocolate origami crane to its Yuzu Meringue and Rose and Pistachio Croissants, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Meanwhile, you can charge your car at the nearby EVX Charging Station.

Margaret, Double Bay

One of Sydney’s culinary gems, Chef Neil Perry’s Margaret in Double Bay serves Australia’s best produce, sourced directly from local suppliers. The menu includes mouth-watering dishes like Freshly Shucked Merimbula Sydney Rock Oysters, Hand-Picked Blue Swimmer Crab and David Blackmore Wagyu Denver. Or dine at Margaret’s sister restaurant, ‘Next Door’, which is located… well, next door. Better yet, there’s an AXCharge Charging Station just around the corner.

Shopping centres

The Rocks

Heading to The Rocks to check out the markets this weekend? From ethical clothing to artisan-made fudge, you’ll leave with your bags bulging. And, with one of the most iconic views in the world, The Rocks is also a great spot for sightseers (or Sydneysiders who want to soak up the view at Opera Bar). You’ll find plenty of charging stations in the area.

Supermarkets

Woolies, Coles, Aldi… No matter where you do your local shop, many supermarkets now have charging stations in their car parks, so you can top up your battery while you pick up something for dinner.

Shopping malls

From the luxurious Westfield Sydney in the CBD to Westfield Bondi Junction, you’ll find electric vehicle charging stations in Westfield malls throughout the city. There are also charging stations at Chatswood Chase and Broadway, which offer free EV charging for as long as you need, for whatever EV model you have.

Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains

Hunter Farm

Whether you’re stopping by to sample the best wine Hunter Valley has to offer at the Cellar Door or taking the kids to feed the llamas, there’s something for everyone at Hunter Farm. Visit for a day or stay awhile at the four-star country inn or one of the romantic spa cottages overlooking wine country. Hunter Farm has three Tesla Superchargers, which are free for customers to use.

Oakvale Wines

Are you a connoisseur of organic wine? Then you can’t miss Oakvale Wines in the Hunter Valley. The winery, established more than a century ago, has a philosophy of minimal intervention. Their vegan-friendly wines are made through a combination of traditional techniques and modern innovations, to create wines with less preservatives, but all the flavour. In keeping with their sustainable approach, there’s also a Tesla Supercharger, which is free for public use.

Wentworth Falls

Vineyards, restaurants and malls aren’t the only places you’ll find charging stations. There’s a ChargeFox charging station less than five minutes away from the Wentworth Falls Lookout in the Blue Mountains. This short but steep walk through the bush rewards hikers with spectacular views of Wentworth Falls and sweeping views of the valley.
